Gold gives enough to shape the stops and sweeps of a written character and stands up to ink; steel suits a heavy hand or a first pen and is cheap enough to own several and keep different inks in them, though a bent steel nib rarely comes back. Its advice on upkeep is as specific: wash the pen through with water every two or three months, never hot water, never detergent; ink itself keeps about three years; wipe what sprays into the cap with a cotton bud. For a first pen, and for one that has stopped behaving.
