It started in 1926, when Chosichi Kawakubo made and sold fountain pens from a small shop near Waseda to students and their professors. After the move to Koishikawa Hayashicho — today's Sengoku — the shop looked after the pens of neighbours who happened to be Kan Kikuchi, Chiyo Uno, and Edward Seidensticker, who translated Kawabata's Snow Country. The second generation, Kazuo, worked on Pilot's large maki-e pens; the third, Katsumi, runs it now. In 1995 it put up the first fountain pen website in Japan and the third in the world. The shelves hold the great international names, the shop's own pens and vintage stock. Nibs are adjusted before a pen is handed over, repairs are taken whatever the maker or the year, and pens are built from scratch — few shops anywhere do all three. Writers and heavy professional users rely on it, and pens from here have been used in films and television dramas. Repairs can also be sent in by post.
