GINZA TSUTAYA

A bookshop built around the idea of living with art. Shelves running close to thirty metres, and small rooms walled in books, hold art titles chosen from Japanese, foreign and second-hand stock. A Starbucks is built in, and books can be read before buying; the café's own shelves hold rare back numbers of foreign art magazines and auction catalogues. At the centre, under a void, sits a 192-square-metre event space ringed by six-metre bookcases. The stationery floor is themed as a maker's study — fountain pens from around the world, Keiichi Kanno's Aero Concept, maki-e pens. A pen chosen on the way out from the books and the art.
