Montblanc's Stevenson edition carves 'Treasure Island' in three tiers: resin, lacquer and silver

Montblanc's Writers Edition Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson tells the story of "Treasure Island" in three tiers of material: the resin standard edition, the lacquer "1883", and the "94" in sterling silver overlaid with gold. Set the official pages side by side (checked on 8 November 2026) and the same story turns out to be carved differently at each level.

The resin standard edition engraves the treasure map's "X" on the barrel

The standard edition has a black resin barrel with engraved crosses, one of them a larger "X", the mark that shows where the treasure lies on the map in the novel. The Montblanc emblem on the cap top carries a pirate's skull and crossbones, and the cap ring bears Stevenson's signature with 1866, the year his first work, "The Pentland Rising", was published. The cap also carries his years, 1850–1894. The nib is Au 750 gold with a rhodium finish, engraved with fine waves and "Tusitala", the name the Samoans gave the writer.

The 1883 puts the schooner Hispaniola on the barrel

The "1883" is the same number as the year "Treasure Island" appeared as a book. The Hispaniola is shown on a black lacquer barrel, with a British ensign behind a small window. Turn a small knob and the flag changes to a pirate flag, acting out the mutiny in the plot. The vertical lines on the cap recall a ship's planks and an old sea chest. The hand-crafted Au 750 gold nib is engraved with clouds, seagulls and "Tusitala".

The 94 has a gold grid and a treasure map on silver

The "94" matches the end of 1894, the year Stevenson died. The barrel and cap are sterling silver (Ag925) under a grid of solid Au 750 gold. The barrel is engraved with the hand-drawn treasure map that starts the novel. On the cap, hand-engraved figures show Long John Silver, the most dangerous man aboard, and the parrot Captain Flint. The top ring of the cap carries the first line of the requiem Stevenson wrote for himself, "UNDER THE WIDE AND STARRY SKY", set in mirror-inverted letters. Montblanc describes this as a nod to the theme of duality in "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". The nib is two-coloured and shows "Tusitala" and palm leaves for Samoa, where the writer settled.

The 1883 fountain pen and rollerball have the same dimensions, yet the rollerball is about 16 g heavier. The standard ballpoint weighs about half as much as the 1883 fountain pen. Prices are the US-dollar figures on Montblanc's English-language page for Peru and vary by region. The United Arab Emirates page, for example, lists the standard fountain pen at AED 6,400 and shows it sold out online.
